The Autumn Countess by Catherine Coulter (1978)

The Autumn Countess (original, 1978)

A HARD BARGAIN
Romantic dreams held no charm for lonely young Miss Andrea James. What Andrea wanted in a husband was the elegant, elderly Earl of Devbridge and the safety he promised from the world of base behavior that Andrea’s rakish father had made her loathe.

Thus the bargain was struck. Andrea would make an enchanting hostess at the Earl’s great family manor. In return, the Earl would give Andrea a glittering title and his word of honor to respect her person.

Only when Andrea arrived at Devbridge Manor to meet the Earl’s devilishly attractive grown-up son… to learn of the Earl’s mysterious young daughter…to hear rumors of the fate of his previous wife…did Andrea realize how much her marriage contract did not cover.

Andrea’s marriage might be in name only–but that name was danger!
