One of the first Regency books I ever read was Gentle Conquest, one of Mary Balogh’s first books. I love her stories, and am not surprised that she is one of the premier Regency authors today.

Balogh is also one of my favourite authors although I must confess her latest ones have left me a bit disappointed. The best ones for me are still her earlier traditional regencies with a darker edge.
I agree that her current books aren’t as enjoyable as her older ones. I’ve been a bit disappointed in the current Huxtable books. Actually, the stories from the Dark Angel and Waite series hold a special place in my heart. The only books from those series I haven’t read is A Precious Jewel. I’m always looking for it at used books stores, but no luck.
I just finished “A Precious Jewel,” which is now available via Amazon Kindle (for those w/o Kindle, you can now download software to read on your pc.)
I have only read the first 3 Huxtable books and so far the third one is my favourite. Oh I loved the Dark Angel series but you’re right they are very hard to find. But if I’m not mistaken A Precious Jewel will be reprinted later this year or next year…
That’s wonderful news to hear that A Precious Jewel is being reissued. I remember reading the last book in the series, A Christmas Bride, and knowing that I was missing important information that was established from that book – specifically what happened to fracture the relationship between the heroine from A Christmas Bride and the hero from A Precious Jewel. Mary Balogh implied a lot of things in A Christmas Bride, but I’ve never known what happened.
I just went by her website to make sure I wasn’t wrong and this is what I found:
And then there are the old books, and there is a whole pile of those scheduled for republication, most of them in 2-in-one volumes. A Precious Jewel, sequel to The Ideal Wife (republished June, 2008), will be out in December, 2009. After that the 2-in-1s start: Dark Angel & Lord Carew’s Bride in March, 2010, The Famous Heroine & The Plumed Bonnet in October, 2010, A Promise of Spring & The Temporary Wife in February, 2011, A Christmas Bride & Christmas Beau in September, 2011, and A Counterfeit Betrothal & The Notorious Rake in January, 2012.
Fantastic! I’ll keep a lookout for it. I liked this entire series. Talking about it makes me want to revisit it.
